Children’s Issues

Children, Youth and Family Consortium brings together the competencies of the University of Minnesota and the resources of Minnesota's communities to address critical health, education, and social policy concerns to improve the well-being of Minnesota's children, youth and families.

Children’s Defense Fund a MN organization dedicated to being an effective voice for children.  Includes KIDS COUNT a county-by-county data on the well-being of MN’s children and families.

Minnesota Family Council together with its subsidiary, Minnesota Family Institute (MFI), is the largest nonprofit, non-partisan, pro-family organization in the state. As a research, education, communication and public policy organization, MFC and MFI are strategically working in five areas to improve family life in Minnesota.

Child Trends is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization that studies children, youth, and families through research, data collection, and data analysis

MN Resources

The Minneapolis Foundation - The Minneapolis Foundation represents thousands of individuals and organizations that have created more than 700 charitable funds.  The Foundation facilitates and acts as a catalyst for charitable giving; administers charitable funds; pools assets where possible to respond to community needs; and distributes grants to nonprofit organizations.
 

Search Institute  – is committed not only to contributing to the knowledge base about youth development, but also to translating high-quality research on children and youth into practical ideas, tools, services, and resources. Best known for their widely-used Developmental Assets model, their web site also contains information about communities, families, schools, and youth-serving organizations.

The Wilder Foundation is a nonprofit health and human services organization that has served the greater Twin Cities, Minnesota, area since 1906.  They offer a wonderful collection of guides on a variety of capacity building topics. 


Capacity Building

The Alliance for Nonprofit Management is the professional association of individuals and organizations devoted to improving the management and governance capacity of nonprofits and to assist nonprofits in fulfilling their mission.

Grant makers for Effective Organizations seeks to advance and expand organizational effectiveness practices in and by the philanthropic community.  Their website has a growing list of resources and research.

"Reflections on Capacity Building" by the California Wellness Foundation explores in depth the foundation's eight year's of capacity building efforts and lessons learned.

Nonprofit Good Practice Guide, is a project of the Philanthropic and Nonprofit Knowledge Management Initiative at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership. With a strong focus on community service, they are dedicated to the study and teaching of philanthropy, volunteerism and nonprofit management.

The Center for Excellence in Nonprofits (CEN) provides the nonprofit community with in-depth leadership development and continuous improvement programs through an innovative learning community model pioneered by CEN.


SVP Affiliates

Social Venture Partners International – enables and catalyzes the federation of SVP’s with a shared mission and principles. SVPI builds a highly effective network for knowledge and best practices sharing.

Social Venture Partners Affiliates - The success of Social Venture Partners is inspiring philanthropists from around the world to create similar high engagement philanthropy operations.  There are more than 25 cities implementing or considering SVP’s model of community giving and engaged donor activity.   


Venture Philanthropy

Robin Hood Foundation (New York, NY) – aims to end poverty in New York City by forming long-term relationships with a wide range of children's, job training, poverty, and educational programs in NYC.  Their approach, along with REDF and Ashoka, has been pioneering in the field of venture philanthropy.

 

Venture Philanthropy Partners (Washington, DC) - is an initiative of the Morino Institute to take advantage of unprecedented wealth creation of the New Economy and an Internet-enabled transformation in organizational effectiveness by establishing a new philanthropic fund to improve services to youth living in low-income areas in the region. Their site includes some excellent documents and speeches, including Venture Philanthropy: Landscape and Expectations.

 

Entrepreneurs Foundation (Palo Alto, CA) – seeks to change the culture of the entrepreneurial (usually pre-IPO) sector in the Silicon Valley/Bay Area so that they incorporate community involvement as a core element of their startup companies. And to make the community stronger by applying venture capital principles to scale-up successful non-profit organizations. They have a very useful section of Resources (organizations, books, and periodicals) and FAQ’s about Venture Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurism.

 

New Schools (Palo Alto, CA) – is a non-profit venture philanthropy fund that was founded to create and support a network of education entrepreneurs. They are building a network among and between education entrepreneurs and New Economy resources and are investing in a portfolio of 8-12 of the best non-profit and for profit education ventures. New Schools works with these ventures to make sure they have access to not only the financial capital they need to succeed, but the human and intellectual capital as well. Their site includes some excellent readings, links, and FAQ’s.

 

New Profit, Inc. (Boston, MA) - plans to attract new financial and intellectual capital to the nonprofit sector and develop new financing mechanisms for investing in social entrepreneurs. NP focuses on long-term, significant investments in a small number of nonprofits and mentor those organizations, serving on their boards, connecting them to service providers and financial supporters.
